I Wish I Knew How To Quit You

Why can't I give up on a show that just isn't as good as it used to be?    I mean, there are plenty of other  shows out there to watch.  Why do I stay with the ones that don't consistently deliver?    Is it because I've already invested so much time into them or do I hold out hope that they might reclaim their genius again?  I guess that's one for the therapy someday.

Yes, I'm referring to "The Office" and the recent unfunny stint by Will Farrell as Deangelo Vickers.  When I heard Steve Carell was leaving, I thought they might be jumping the shark, but I figured I'd flip the Will Farrell coin and give it a chance.  (Will Farrell coin=only about half of what Will Ferrell does is funny.  You know it's true.)
Sorry, but the character was creepy and disturbed. Yes, every other character on "The Office" is creepy and disturbed, but creepy and disturbed without funny is not a good combination.   Although last week's show (without Farrell) was better, I am a little worried.  Unless they actually make Creed the new manager...that would be AWESOME. Talk about taking creepy and disturbed and funny to a whole new level.

Was Steve Carell the be-all end-all?  Not sure, but he was part of an incredible ensemble cast where every part contributed to the whole.  Maybe they should have considered stopping on top.  Let the whole show say goodbye rather than try to extract one part and ruin the whole.   MASH did it, The Sopranos did it, Seinfeld did it, Friends did it, the Mary Tyler Moore Show did it.  I hope when it's time, The Simpsons will do it and Modern Family will do it.

I could take a stand by not watching anymore, but I've already got the Season Pass on my DVR and I feel like I'm letting someone down if I cancel it.  Gotta go, Dr. Melfi will see me now.

  1. Ken, I love the blog, keep up the good work!
I used to watch The Office every week, but I stopped watching around the time of the wedding in Season 6. My wife and I used to talk about Jim and Pam like they were real people; by Season 6 I felt like the "real" Jim and Pam would have moved on to NYC or something. Keeping them in Scranton felt forced; I felt sorry for them.
MASH is actually the exception which proves the rule- they lost a bunch of key players and remained a quality show for 11 seasons: Trapper John, Colonel Blake, Major Burns, and Radar O'Reilly all left and were replaced. ~~Nat W.

  2. Thanks for reading Nat. Forgot about all of the people that left Mash and yet it still remained good until the end. Maybe becasue then, there were fewer shows and the quality could remain intact.

  3. Reason # 412 why I stopped watching The Office... There were days when Michael Scott reminded me of a certain golden toed exec who roamed the halls of the 24th floor of a certain tower in Boston.
